I think the Mayans simply completed the calendar cycle they were working on, and being hundreds of years ahead of their own times, didn't bother starting a new one.

Or we never found the next section of their calendar Jim its lost somewhere in the jungles of the Mexico area. The reality of course is that their reading would at best predict some major natural disasters with a probable world wide flood not some unnatural and magical world enlightenment.

What I love most of all is that a much later Aztec calendar is always used as the illustration of the "Mayan" calendar which just shows how the "mystical" believers in change respect the real facts.
